Over 100 people attended the book launch for Johan Callewaert’s The accession of the European Union to the European Convention on Human Rights which took place at ENA (Strasbourg) on Thursday 10 April.

The conference was opened by Ms Nadine Nicklaus, Deputy Director of European Affairs of ENA, who welcomed all the participants, and by Ms Edith Lejard-Boutsavath, Deputy Director of Communications at the Council of Europe. Mr Dean Spielmann, President of the European Court of Human Rights, gave the introductory speech and underlined the importance of the subject of European Union accession to the European Convention on Human Rights. Mr Hannes Krämer, member of the legal service of the European Commission and negotiator of the draft accession treaty, presented the viewpoint of the European Union; Ms Marjan Janssens, Deputy Permanent Representative of Belgium to the Council of Europe, outlined that of states, Ms Florence Benoît-Rohmer, professor at Strasbourg University, set out the point of view of universities, and the author, Mr Johan Callewaert, Deputy Grand Chamber Registrar of the European Court of Human Rights, considered the subject from the point of view of the Council of Europe.

These presentations were followed by a lively debate with the audience, moderated by Mr Denis Masmejan, journalist (Le Temps, Geneva).
