Le trafic d’organes humains est une activité criminelle en plein essor qui présente un danger évident à la fois pour l’individu et pour la santé publique, tout en violant les droits de l’homme et les libertés fondamentales. La Convention du Conseil de l’Europe contre le trafic d’organes humains cherche à protéger les droits individuels en abordant ce comportement illégal du point de vue du droit pénal. La Convention vise à lutter contre ce crime à la fois aux niveaux national et international en harmonisant la législation nationale, en identifiant les diverses infractions qui constituent le trafic d’organes humains et en posant les bases d’une coopération transfrontalière plus efficace. Elle s’attache également aux mesures préventives et traite de la situation juridique des victimes. Une large adhésion à la Convention est essentielle dans la lutte contre un crime dont la portée est le plus souvent transnationale.
