La notion d’indépendance prend différents sens selon le contexte. De fait, les professionnels du cinéma et de l'audiovisuel la définissent de manières diverses. La législation elle-même décline la notion d'indépendance en fonction du but poursuivi. La Directive Services de médias audiovisuels de l’Union européenne évoque par exemple l’indépendance à l’égard des radiodiffuseurs. Cela signifie, en théorie du moins, qu’une production d’un grand studio hollywoodien est indépendante au sens de cette directive. Etonnant, non ?
