2017 : Finding hope and humanity in reality

■ This year’s calendar offers a humanising look at children living their lives in real environments across our 47 member states. All photographs are taken by Council of Europe photographers who have accompanied our monitoring bodies to different areas, to see in what conditions children are living; to discover how they are accessing education; what health care provision they are receiving - in short, to find out how their human rights are being respected.
■ This year’s calendar should represent reality, and the hope and humanity that are found within it. While some photographs show children in difficult or uncomfortable circumstances, they also portray children at play, enjoying themselves, interacting with one another or merely expressing happiness. These are Europe’s children: these are snapshots of their childhoods.
