In the wake of the dissolution of several European states, acute attention has been given to the question of the consequences of state succession for the nationality of physical persons.
The Venice Commission, aware of the importance of this matter for European citizens, has endeavoured to define the guiding principles which govern it. This volume brings together the results of the commission's work in this sphere. It complements the proceedings of a seminar organised by the commission and the University of Vilnius in May 1997 on the same subject, published as No. 21 of this series.
