The legal framework for audiovisual media by its nature is complex: the audiovisual sector is regulated on three different levels as it is covered by national, supranational and international legislation. In addition, activities of the audiovisual industry fall within the scope of specific laws for audiovisual media and under generally applicable rules. The continuous development of information technology and the globalisation of media market increase the complexity of the legal issues even further. The Legal Guide to Audiovisual Media in Europe aims to clarify and to contextualise the different legal norms applicable to broadcasting, film, telecommunications, and the Global Information Society in Europe. This book does not only address specialists of European media law but also the larger professional audience interested in tracking the constantly changing legal landscape for audiovisual media. The Legal Guide is a product of the European Audiovisual Observatory with contributions from its three partner institutions, the Institute of European Media Law (EMR), the Institute for Information Law (IviR), and the Moscow Media Law and Policy Center (MMPLPC) and as such explores the current legal systems covering audiovisual media in all of Europe and as an annex in some neighbouring countries.
